What are Chrome signals?

Chrome signals measure how often a site is accessed in the Chrome browser overall — regardless of whether someone arrived via Google search or typed the URL directly. High direct visits show that users trust the site independently of search. For ranking, this is a powerful trust signal: a site that people bookmark, type directly, or visit regularly is more trustworthy than one that only receives traffic from search.

The Google API leak confirmed two Chrome-related fields: chromeInTotal (total Chrome visits) and uniqueChromeViews (unique visitors from Chrome). Together, these fields capture both the volume and the breadth of direct browser access.

Chrome signals are a primary Trust signal (T: primary). This makes architectural sense: direct browser access is one of the hardest signals to manipulate. A spammer can build links, generate clicks, and create content — but they cannot easily make thousands of people type a URL directly into Chrome.

Chrome signals vs. NavBoost

NavBoost and Chrome signals are complementary. NavBoost measures search-driven behavior: what users do after clicking a Google result. Chrome signals measure direct behavior: what users do when they visit a site without going through Google. Together they form a complete picture of user engagement.

A site that ranks well in search (high NavBoost) but has low direct Chrome traffic may be good at SEO but not at building brand loyalty. A site with high Chrome traffic but low search rankings may have a loyal audience that doesn't use Google to find it. The ideal site has both: high search visibility and high direct traffic.

Chrome signals create a strong incentive for brand building. SEO that only optimizes for search visibility misses the direct-traffic dimension. A site that people bookmark and visit directly sends trust signals that search-only sites cannot match.

For large publishers, the uniqueChromeViews metric matters: it is not just total visits, but unique visitors. A site where the same 100 people visit daily will have high chromeInTotal but low uniqueChromeViews. A site that attracts new visitors daily will have both high. Google rewards breadth, not just depth of engagement.
