01What are QualityBoost-Demotions?

QualityBoost-Demotions is a penalty system for concrete quality and navigation deficiencies. Unlike Panda (which is a site-wide quality score) or SpamBrain (which is AI-based spam detection), QualityBoost-Demotions is a targeted system: it penalizes specific issues that are identifiable and fixable.

The Google API leak confirmed three specific demotion fields: navDemotion penalizes poor page guidance — unclear navigation, misleading structure, or missing internal links. anchorMismatch penalizes links where the link text doesn't match the target page content. serpDemotion penalizes pages that perform poorly in SERP interactions — high bounce rates, short dwell times, or pogo-sticking.

02navDemotion: poor page guidance

navDemotion penalizes pages with poor internal navigation. A page that a user lands on but cannot navigate away from — no related links, no breadcrumbs, no clear path to other content — receives a navDemotion. This is different from clutterScore (which measures too much clutter) — navDemotion measures too little guidance.

The architectural significance: Google measures not just whether users arrive, but whether they can continue. A page that is a dead end — no related articles, no internal links, no clear next step — signals poor user experience. 03anchorMismatch: misleading internal links

anchorMismatch penalizes links where the link text doesn't match the target page content. If an internal link says 'weather forecast for Hamburg' but the target page is a general climate overview, that's an anchorMismatch — the link promised one thing, the page delivered another.

This is related to but distinct from Anchor-Spam (System 17). Anchor-Spam detects manipulative external anchor text patterns. anchorMismatch detects misleading internal anchor text — it is about honesty, not manipulation. 04serpDemotion: poor SERP performance

serpDemotion penalizes pages that perform poorly in SERP interactions. This is the NavBoost connection: if users consistently bounce from a page back to the search results, the page receives a serpDemotion. The signal is not the bounce itself — it is the pattern of bounces that indicates the page failed to satisfy the user.
