Panda / BabyPanda

Panda lowers the ranking of an entire website when too much of it consists of thin or low-quality content. It applies to the whole site, not just to individual pages. If too large a share of a site is rated as 'thin content' (content-poor pages), all pages of the site rank worse. BabyPandaV2 is a newer, more finely calibrated variant of the same principle.

Panda is calibrated to rater judgments (people who assess search results). Similar to chard, it judges content quality, but on the basis of site-wide patterns rather than individual pages.

Trust is primary: a site with a lot of thin content is seen as unreliable. Expertise is indirect: thin content signals to raters a lack of subject-matter competence.

For sites with thousands of automatically generated pages, Panda is a real risk. Pages that show only raw data without context or added value can pull down the site average. Active pruning, meaning removing or improving weak pages, matters more than constantly adding new ones.
